Apply Blush Like a Pro

Here are my quick and easy steps for flawless application of blush.  There are different types of blush available; however if you are looking for a product that won’t irritate your skin makeup without titanium dioxide, like Christopher Drummond Beauty.  We have many products for sensitive skin that are free of this irritating ingredient.

STEP 1
Determine your color. For lighter skin tones, try a light peach, light bronze, or pinkish shade for blush. Those with a medium skin tone can choose bronze, pink,  light reds. And darker tones may want to try plums, deep reds, fuschias and bronze shades.

STEP 2
Choosing a cream blush vs. powder. A rule of thumb is cream blush is best for dry skin and powder is better for oily skin types. Though cream tends to blend a little better, it is not as easy to apply. Once you have your powder blush get a professional makeup brush (the ones that come with the actual blush are often less effective in applying the product).

STEP 3
Getting rid of excess blush. If using powder, before applying the blush pat the brush on a napkin or your hand  to get rid of excess blush. When using a cream, take a bit of the product on your finger and make sure you blend lightly, being sure to rub it all the way in.

STEP 4
Properly applying blush. Apply to the “apples” of your cheeks. If unsure where that is, smile. The areas that rise like an apple are where to dab your blush. If you’re skilled enough, you can also try applying blush from your cheeks up to the side of the face stopping near the hair line for more emphasis.
Tools:  Make sure you apply with the correct brush.  Too much hair in the brush will cause you to apply too much product!  The AIR BLENDER is the perfect brush to apply color to cheeks

The Perfect Blush Brush: The Air Blender

STEP 5
Using the right amount. Unlike other cosmetics, blush should not be applied more than once for an effect. One stroke of blush should be enough to get the look; though some tend to overdo it, the point of blush is to give a faint tint of color not for the color to overshadow your other makeup.

STEP 6
Even out blush. Final step, make sure blush is applied evenly. If you applied too much, dab with a clean brush. For cream, keep napkins on deck to lightly tap onto your cheek if there is too much product.

makeup tips for the holiday

Kerry Washington Looks Beautiful for the Holidays

3 weeks left to Christmas! NYC make-up pro Christopher Drummond shares his holiday tips on how to get a glowing beautiful look for the Holiday season–Much like Kerry Washington.  The look is simple yet gorgeous!

- For a brilliantly bold lip, apply concealer (or a nude lip liner) all over the lips.  Then fill lips in with a rich red lip liner (this stays on for a long time, and doesn’t wipe off easily–be sure to apply it all over the lips), and apply a sheer red gloss over top. Make sure to keep the eyes minimal and the skin glowing.  The key is to not look too made up, but still look stunning!

-Luminous skin is always a “must have” for holiday! My beauty secret for a healthy glow is to mix a dab of Saude Pele Radiance Booster in with moisturizer,  and blend onto the skin. Set with Veludo Velvet Foundation powder and you’re literally “lit from within”.

-To focus on the eyes, get a shimmery champange colored eye shadow (Try Innocent by CDB), and apply all over the lid.  Then, apply gel or liquid liner along the lash line from the inner corners of the eyes and wing it out towards the outer edge. This look adds definition to the eyes and creates a striking statement.

Suggested products are from Christopher Drummond Beauty, a line of all-natural, organic-based, and vegan makeup for all skin colors.  www.christopherdrummond.com

Christopher Drummond is no stranger to color-matching makeup. When he was a model, makeup artists never were able to match his coloring up correctly. This led to his beginning as a pro makeup artist, and eventually creating his own makeup line. The line (www.christopherdrummond.com) is the only luxury makeup line that is all natural, organic and vegan that caters to all skintones and colors. “The first luxury all natural line that isn’t afraid to cater to any and all skin tones,” Drummond says.

“I knew that I could do better than what was out there.” Drummond remembers, “for years, I had looked for the right makeup: a high quality product that was comprable to the Chanel’s and Dior’s on the market, but I wanted more. I wanted the colors to be made for me. I wanted the ingredients to be all natural. I wanted animal-friendly ingredients and tools. It didn’t exist. Anywhere. So, I did what I do best, I took the bull by the horns, and made a line that surpassed my high standards.”

Drummond is an established makeup artist with the passion and time to show: 15 years of runway, film, print, and lifestyle work. This coupled with the fact that he has been a licensed esthetician for 10 years adds that much more credibility. He also has marketing, product development and packaging development experience.

Considered a “Beauty Lifestyle Expert,” he is looking to do more than just paint faces, he wants to change lives. “I am a strong believer that superficial beauty washes off; real beauty lasts forever….”

Don’t worry my sistas! I haven’t forgotten about you!!! As we know, the colors that work for caucasians may not hold up to darker skin…so here is a lovely look just for the dark-skinned women out there.

You can easily achieve this look by using cosmetics that don’t have titanium dioxide in them. (TD is a white mineral that turns dark skin “ashy”). So, if you want a warm, natural look use products like
Christopher Drummond Beauty. Four colors were customized specifically for all ethnic skin types.

One thing I love about African Americans, is that we can wear colors that would look ridiculous on caucasians!!! I say, take advantage of it!!! From a brilliant gold (check out this one from CDB), to dark rich colored lipstick and blush.
Don’t be afraid to take advantage of your gorgeous skin color….
HOWEVER, Please don’t overdo it, ladies!!!! You all know what i’m talking about!!!! There is a fine line between trendy and gaudy!!!

Q:
I am about two to three shades darker than you and am having problems using a concealer to cover my acne scars. The scars are pretty pigmented and to cover them well I seem to use a lot of concealer and then after I put on my foundation the colors don’t blend well. Also, I seem to be a little darker around the corners of my mouth and around the eyes.

Who makes a good full-coverage yet lightweight foundation? I have tried MAC foundations, but no matter the type I often break out. I have also tried Prescriptives, Mary Kay and now I am using The Queen Collection by Queen Latifah.

If you were to do a video on African-American makeup application could you please highlight these issues and others that seem to affect women of color that I have not mentioned.

Thanks in Advance,
LaToya

A:
LaToya,
Most makeup brands are not good with matching ethnic skin colors, and are notorious for breaking people out. They have amazing eyeshadow colors, but most foundations are not made to be “skin friendly”. You should be very careful about the ingredients in makeup and teach yourself what ingredents are good, and which are bad. There are a lot of websites to help you with this.

Anyway, I specifically created my makeup line to work with ethnic skin tones. You would use our darkest shade. You would also use the dark concealer. Neither products will break you out…I promise!!!! Plus the texture is amazing, and the feel is light as air! The “marrom/brown” color is darker in real life than on the website. I made it for deep/chocolate shades, and it won’t ash you out.
