How to Look Like a Shape Model
by Christopher Drummond

On a recent shoot in Miami for Shape Magazine, I did the hair and makeup on the beautiful model Carolin Galler, photographed by Michael Reh.  Here are the products I used to get her looking fresh and radiant:

Carolin with Equinox Trainer Jacqueline Kasen. Makeup by Christopher Drummond, photo by Michael Reh

The key to doing the makeup for this shoot was to do everything in layers.  After all, it was very hot, and the model was sweating because it was early morning!

  1. Apply new SkinPrep to prime and hydrate the skin
  2. Duo-Phase concealer (mixed with SkinPrep) where needed
  3. Duo-Phase concealer where needed “full strength” under eyes, around nose
  4. Veludo Velvet foundation in #100.  I applied this in 4 layers, so it wouldn’t sweat off
  5. Cheeks:  Alluring apricot Blush
  6. Lips:  Nude lip liner, Cosmopolitan Lip Stain
  7. Eyes:  Bege Eye Shadow, Aymee on the lid, and Marrom/brown in the crease.  Cream to powder eyeliner in Espresso on eyeline and lightly on brow.  CDB Lash of Luxury mascara-3 coats.
  8. Finale Finishing Powder is used all over to “set” the makeup and give an airbrushed look.

Adele's Makeup Was a Winner on the Red Carpet

Adele was the belle of the ball at the Grammy’s last night.  Not only did she sound amazing, but her makeup was flawless.  Here is how to get the look that Adele sported last night:

Start with a clean, hydrated skin (use CDB’s NEW SkinPrep as a primer).  Next, follow up with CDB’s duo phase concealer, then follow up with Veludo Velvet Foundation.  To get the flawless airbrushed look, be sure to use Finale Finishing Powder, it will give you Adele’s all over matte finish. The light powder evens out your skin tone, minimizes pores and has anti-aging properties.

To highlight your eyes, start with long dramatic false lashes. Adele’s fake lashes gradually get longer towards the outside of her eye to intensify the cat eye effect. Next add a very thick layer of liquid liner on your top lids for that sexy look.  She did darken her eyeshadow for a grey smoky eye when she stepped up to perform.

First, grab your liquid liner. Adele’s eyes were a smokey masterpiece on Sunday night, but they still had definition achieved with a cat’s flick of eye liner over silver-grey shadow and a double layer of false lashes. Adele’s makeup artist traced the liner from the inner corners of her eyes to the outer ones, crescendo-ing the thickness of the liner at the ends and giving them a little upwards flick. Lash density was also built in the outer corners: the makeup artist amplified this area to lift Adele’s eyes.

Paint the picture:

• Liquid liner – most liquid liners don’t dry quickly enough leaving an imprint on your upper lids or browbones.  However, use CDB’s Cream to powder brow/eyeliner, and you won’t have that problem!

• Shadow – one that doesn’t crease and holds liner like primer.  Try CDB in Beige and Momo.  Be sure to use Duo Phase Concealer under the shadows to keep them there for the duration of the night.

• Lipstain – vital to the look is a high powered lip-colour.  Try CDB’s Creamy Lip Stain in Arouse.  The color is long lasting, the ingredients are all natural, and the color is the perfect red carpet “red”.

Top 10 Beauty Tips by Christopher Drummond

Beauty Bowl "Super Beauty Tips"

Christopher’s Top 10 Beauty Tips of all Time

  1. 1.  Always put sunscreen on your hands and neck.  They’re just as important as your face, and they show aging the fastest! Your hands and neck tell the most about your age, and the sun is the most damaging thing to your skin!
  2. 2.  Eat cheese, nuts, garlic and onions. They contain vitamins that are good for the hair and nails.
  3. 3.  Rub the pith of a lemon peel on very dry hands. It will sting, but they’ll heal up immediately, like magic.
  4. 4.  Masks are an important part of Indian culture,” says Indian beauty pro Richa Purohit, creative director of KeSARI skin care. For oily skin, she mixes 1 tablespoon of sandalwood powder (at organic markets or online) with a pinch of turmeric and a few tablespoons of orange juice. Apply it to face and neck, let it dry and rinse with cool water. For normal skin, use rosewater, not juice.
  5. 5.  Try using A spritz of floral water or tonic in the morning to awaken the skin.  It works like magic!
  6. 6.  Mix a dab of powder foundation (Like Veludo Velvet Foundaton) into your favorite organic beauty cream to perfect your complexion.  It is better than any tinted moisturizer and absolutely undetectable.
  7. 7.  Add a peeled and chopped clove of garlic to your bottle of clear base coat.  This surprising bit of wisdom will actually help to strengthen your nails.
  8. 8.  Coconut milk helps the hair grow long and thick,” says Indian ayurvedic skincare expert Pratima Raichur. (The kind from a can is fine.) Rub it onto the scalp, leave it on for an hour or so, then wash it out.  To see Herbs you can take for your skin, see Amazon Herbs.  I swear by them!
  9. 9.  Be sure to wear lip products that are free of petroleum.  This ingredient is a biproduct of gasoline, and actually can dry out the skin, rather than hydrate it.  Use natural oils instead.
  10. 10.  The best way to fight aging and prevent pimples is to use a retinoid (pure vitamin A). You’ve likely heard this, but have you tried it? It is honestly the one thing that will make a huge difference in the appearance of your skin

Me at a Photo Shoot With Celebrity Trainer Jennifer Nicole Lee in Miami

As a celebrity makeup artist, I have worked on many different types of women: dark skin, light skin, bad skin and good skin. I found that no matter the age of the woman, and how much makeup she has, one thing is pretty true across the board: women like to have advice about applying makeup.

I keep it very simple. After all, if someone is not knowledgeable about applying makeup, I’m not going to give them advanced tips. This article gives tips and tricks on how to apply makeup on all skin types, colors and ages. Here are simple and quick tips on how to not only apply makeup, but how to decide if what you are using is correct for you.

1. Clean, exfoliate and moisturize your skin.

Makeup will not look good no matter what if you have dry, flakey skin. It is incredibly important to prepare the skin prior to any makeup application. Moiturizing is key. I prefer all natural moisturizers that do not have parabens, artifical colors, fragrances or preservatives.

2. Less is More!

It’s always better looking and easier to apply if you are light handed with your makeup. I always say, it’s easy to have to add more, and it’s difficult to take it off when too much has been applied.

3. Foundation Matching: Don’t go too dark

Many women think it’s better to go darker with foundation. This is not true. Darker foundation will age you, and will not make your skin look healthy. If you are trying to decide between which color to get, go with the lighter color (this is not true for African American women. With dark skin, if you go lighter, it looks horrible!). If you need to warm up the complexion, use a bronzer. This will give you color that looks natural and radiant.

4. Don’t Overdo Eyeliner

Especially for daytime makeup, heavy eyeliner ages the eyes, pulls them down, and darkens them. This means that generally too much liner looks really really bad. By focusing eyeliner on the top lid, you will keep the eye bright and awake looking. If you MUST add liner ont he bottom, apply a dark brown powder right at the lashes, and blend it in well with a smudger brush. It will add volume to the lashes without adding too much weight to the bottom of the eyes.

5. Blush is Great–When Applied Correctly

Follow my golden rule with blush, too: “Less is More”! It’s always better to add too little, and have to add more. Apply an apricot colored blush (NOT RED OR PINK) to caucasian skin, and for african amhericans, you can get more daring and red-toned with blush. Dark skin naturally has more depth to it, so you can add colors like rich amethyst or ruby colors without looking like a clown. Caucasian women should wear orange-colored (not BRIGHT orange!) blush–apricot looks good on all skin tones.

I apply blush to the cheeks, of course (remember, add it lightly), but also a teeny amount to the temples and forehead to add depth and color to the skin.

6. Lips-Keep it simple

I always use a nude lip liner all over the lips as a base, then a neutral colored lip stain on top. This keeps color truer, and the color will stay on longer. Just stick with a nice mauve color (or nude). These colors work on all skin colors of skin.

7. Don’t dismiss Powder Foundation

Many women use liquid foundation. Unfortunately, it is usually full of chemicals and bad ingredients. Not to mention liquids have a tendency to clog pores and absorb into the skin.

For everyday wear, I use a natural powder and lightly dust it over a concealer. Powders also have a tendency to last all day, while liquids do not.

And there you have it. Seven quick and easy tips for flawless makeup application!

As we all know, awards season is a harbinger of things to come for spring 2012 makeup trends.  I am glad to say, the look on the red carpet for the celebrities was very minimal and realistic.  There wasn’t the “over-glamour” that can happen at many awards shows.

The prediction for Spring 2012 makeup trends, according to the red carpet at the 2012 golden globe awards is:  simple elegance.  Every woman seems to embrace her different look, which I think is great.  There truly was a trend for very minimal (read: natural looking and not over done) makeup.  Bravo, Hollywood!

Here are some highlights:

Emma Stone Looked Gorgeous for the 2012 Golden Globes.

Emma Stone was one of the top looks.  Her eyes were perfectly done:  the liner was not too heavy as some celebrities (Debra Messing and Nicole Richie looked aged with ultra-heavy eye liner!).  Emma’s skin looked gorgeous, but not cakey

Jessica Biel: Clean and Gorgeous

Jessica Biel looked really flawless….the pink tones in her makeup really made her look rosy, athletic, healthy and happy!  Eyes were minimally done, and the real star of her makeup was her gorgeous-looking skin!

Morena Baccarin: Classic Beauty

How classic did Morena Baccarin look?  Her makeup was so simple and complimentary to her olive complexion.  The lipstick was the perfect shade of pink/mauve, and her blush was barely there.  Perfection

Paula Patton Can Do No Wrong

I’ve worked on Paula Patton before, and she is a true beauty who literally doesn’t need makeup.  However, when done right (like in this picture), she looks delicious.  She has a minimal smokey eye, nude lips, and a pop of color on her cheeks.  She needed minimal makeup, since she was wearing fire engine yellow as a dress!  GREAT job!

Glenn is Glowing

Another celebrity whom I’ve worked with, Glenn doesn’t need a lot of makeup.  She knows that too much would age her, and take away from her unique features and beautiful skin.  I love the color choice, and minimal eye makeup used on her.  Very age appropriate and flattering.

Octavia: Looking Good, Girl!

While Octavia Spencer is not a “traditional” beauty, I thought her makeup looks great here and doesn’t overpower her strong features.  Her skin looks great, and she has a sophisticated smokey eye, and a glossy nude lip.  Nicely done.

DISHONORABLE MENTION:
I’ve always told women, the quickest way to age yourself and to make your eyes look smaller is by adding way too much eyeliner (especially on the bottom of the eyes).  Here are two perfect examples:  Debra Messing and Nicole Richie.

Eye Liner No-no: Debra Messing

Smokey Eye Gone Awry: Nicole Richie

Sexy Red Lips JLO Style

How to Get Glamorous Red Lips Without Looking Like Bozo the Clown.

Classic Red: Taylor Swift

Anytime a woman wants to look truly glamorous, I always suggest sexy red lips.  Now with the Holidays at hand, it’s the perfect time for a “RED LIP TUTORIAL”.  So if you want your makeup to look like Jennifer Lopez or Taylor Swift (pictured above), read up.

1.  I like to apply lip liner all over–accent the outer edge well–and I prefer to use a nude pencil so as to not be TOO red.  This keeps lipstick on longer, and also evens out the lip color.   (Suggested product:  CDB Lip Pencil in Nude)

2.  Apply lipstick using a lip brush for more control and precise application. A touch of gloss adds a special shine. I like to blend the gloss with the lipstick for a more sheer effect.            (Suggested colors:  Arouse Lip Stain, and Ruby Slippers Lip gloss, both by CDB–they are all natural and vegan and long lasting gorgeous colors)

3.  I also use concealer (with a brush) along the lip line as a cleanup and also as a way to highlight the lip. A touch at the cupids bow (the little indentation above your upper lip) adds extra dimension.

4.  If you’re anticipating having a beverage or two and want your lipstick to stay on: Skip the gloss, and use a long wearing color. Or, use a straw in your drink like we do with the models backstage.  NEVER leave lipstick on a glass…..
